Important Update for Back’nGrooveMom Readers!

I got to admit that the start of summer has ushered in a bit of writer’s block for me.  I was so excited over the reappearance of the sun and the promise of spending time outdoors that my brain was a bit distracted!  Then, this morning, while I was spinning away…..a rush of ideas came to me!

Women Entrepreneurs – be honest and open!

A few months ago, I connected with a fun and exciting female inventor through my blog.  We have been working together a bit….bouncing ideas off one another and giving feedback.  This entrepreneur, Becky Lucid, has also been an amazing supporter of the blog, so I asked her to write-up some thoughts for a post.  When I received Becky’s entry, I was extremely flattered and a little embarrassed to run it (it was about ME), but I decided to share it with you.  Not as a big tribute to me, but rather as a spotlight on the difference one woman can make on another with just an open-mind and a helping hand.  I am so thankful for the collaboration that Becky and I share, and while she is not a “mom” in the traditional sense, she is a “daughter” with “mom” responsibilties….read on and you will see:

what’s the deal with Twitter?

I cannot tell you how many times I hear “What is the deal with Twitter?”  Or, “I don’t get that Twitter thing.”  While Facebook profiles seem to be universal now, the world appears to be divided on Twitter.  People either get it or they don’t.  I love Twitter.  I did not always love Twitter, but now I really love, love Twitter.  So, what is the deal really with Twitter?

Imagination, Good Enough, & a little more….

The week began with a bang for this Back’NGrooveMom!  The whirlwind started early Monday Morning when I attended a breakfast and kickoff event for imagine! career week.  It was thrilling to be invited.  Why was this so exciting?  The Keynote speaker was our Governor, The Honorable Tom Corbett, AND the opening and closing remarks were being given by a close friend, fabulous gal, mom, and mentor – Stefani Pashman.  Stefani is the CEO of Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board, A MOM, and an advocate for women everywhere.

The overall purpose of imagine! career week is to “Explore the many Career Paths in the Pittsburgh Region,” and the week is full of workshops and information sessions on those career paths.  Many of the sessions focus on our youth.  The event, organized and arranged for by Stefani and her staff, has made youth a priority! Governor Corbett picked up on this topic in his address, and spoke on the importance of exposing young people to opportunities.

mompreneurs’ blogging is flavorful

My mom always says – Everyone likes something different, that is why they make chocolate and vanilla! This theory applies to my boys when it comes to making their lunches.  Son #1 likes just peanut butter on his bagel.  Son #2 enjoys both peanut butter and jelly on his bagel.  I know you are wondering why I am discussing PB&J on bagels in my blog, but stay with me for a moment.

Do you write a blog?  Do you want to write a blog?  Has someone told you to write a blog?  I am sure that you have heard about the importance of writing a blog in biz today, but do you have trouble deciding what to write in your blog?  Perhaps, you question what style to use when writing in your blog?  Here comes the PB&J connection.  Just like my one son loves the bold flavor of plain peanut butter, some writers & readers gravitate to strong discussion of the facts. Other writers & readers love the sweetness and flavor of a blog candied with a personal side.  Either way, you cannot go wrong….

what I learned from my sorority days!

Spoiler Alert – I am jamming to Rusted Root while writing this post…….

This weekend, I saw Rusted Root play live at a local fundraiser.  What a blast from the past this was for me!  Rusted Root is a Pittsburgh-Bred Band that broke out in the 90’s.  The band was hugely popular in State College, PA – home to Penn State – where I went to college.  I have SO MANY memories of seeing Rusted Root live and just hanging out and listening to them during those years.  Seeing Rusted Root this weekend really made me feel nostalgic for those Penn State days and my sorority sisters……

Spoiler Alert #2 –

I am going to write about what I learned from my sorority sisters……

justin bieber & mompreneurs, solopreneurs, entrepreneurs

Never say Never, Never say Never……

That’s right!  I am quoting Justin Bieber.  Believe me when I say, I cannot believe it myself! After the Grammys last night, you are more than likely at maximum capacity with musical performers, but hear me out……Over the weekend, I joined a group of my friends who have daughters (remember – I only have boys) to go see Justin Bieber, Never Say Never in 3D.  I am sure you are saying “NEVER” – that you would never go see this movie.  Guess what?  The movie was a lot of fun AND I learned something!  Besides the fact that Bieber’s mom, grandparents, agent, vocal coach, and Usher tell a compelling story about Justin and his life, the movie is really about branding.  You heard correctly – branding.  If you are starting a business, growing a business, or rebuilding a business – GO see this movie!

a little re-prioritizing, laughter & venting on a SNOW DAY

Last week, I attended a webinar led by social media guru, Ann Evanston.  One of the main takeaways was — vlogging is in.  If you do not know what a vlog is – it is basically a  video blog.  A little panic set in me after hearing that vlogging was in because I really do not love making videos.  In an effort to offset making a vlog, I inserted a quick slideshow  (of my adorable dogs) in one of my blogs last week.  I knew that I had to make a vlog sooner than later, and it was on my list for today.

Except that today ended up being a SNOW DAY for my boys, and everyone was HOME!  Originally, today was supposed to just be a two hour delay for school, so when I prioritized my day, I still kept the vlog in the top 3!  Then, school was cancelled, and I thought what a great excuse of getting over the fear of vlogging than a day that has already gone hairy.  Why not have a little fun with my 2 little cameramen running around.  AND, fun was what we had.  The boys helped me with the first part of the taping, and when we lost sound on one part – I figured, run with it!  That is the theme of this day – run with it!

So, without any further introduction, I give you THE attempted SNOW DAY VLOG (unedited, run with it version).

I know that many of you, moms, are stressed today.  A number of you have touched base and shared your thoughts and stressors.  Sometimes, the best cure for chaos is to laugh and make fun of yourself like I did in my vlog AND/OR vent to a good friend.  Feel free to leave your SNOW DAY vent below!

look r. BRAfeld, it is the prototype

Good Morning – welcome to 2011! The 5 a.m. wake-up was ROUGH this morning……

A little update for my Backngroove-Readers – My boys still have 1 more day off of school!  I know – RIDICULOUS!  After 2 weeks of being off of school, the teachers need an in-service day, and we parents, who really need a mental health day, have the kiddos home for 24 more hours.  If anyone wants to borrow my boys for one day, I can even send a packed lunch!

Well, this Backngroovemom has to get back to reality, so I am taking advantage of having an old sitter home from college – thanks Mary! – Who is on off on her own adventure with the “not so much Backngroove-Boys” today.  Tomorrow will be a very nasty wake-up.

The last 20, I mean 2, weeks have been relaxing and exhausting all at the same time.  It was nice to table my “braduct” for 2 weeks and enjoy my kids and out-of-town company.  After 2 weeks of watching & playing basketball, cooking, skiing, cooking, going to movies, cooking, even a trip to Dave & Busters (whew) and endless cleaning up…I AM READY TO START IT UP!
