When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade (original quote by someone’s grandma?) ……
……An absolute favorite saying of mine. I have always tried to apply these words to my life no matter whether it was something little or big. When the boys were infants, and I had a LONG day that did not allow me to shower or eat a whole meal or make a phone call, I took pleasure in a hot bubble-bath after I got the boys to sleep. When my grandmother died, I survived devastation when a few days later, I found out she would have a namesake when I discovered I was pregnant. Today, I was really going back and forth with what I should write on the blog, AND then my day changed because my husband forgot to send my son to school with a lunch (on the last day of school).
Summer is here! I hope that you all had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. Our weekend flew by — between swimming, eating ice cream, a family wedding, and pool party/cookout in West Virginia, I barely had time to breathe. It was fun while it lasted, but I woke up this morning on Tuesday with a giant sense of urgency. You see – my boys only have FIVE more days of school and that means that I have a lot to do in FIVE days!
The sun shines, the air is warm, and we do not have to BUNDLE in huge winter coats. Summer also creates chaos because school is out and if you have school-age kids, schedules drastically change. As moms (and dads) we scramble to figure out what out kids will do during the summer months, so we can eek out a little work.
As the holiday weekend approaches and signs of summer start to pop up, it is a great time to reflect on business so far for the year. At almost the half-way point through the year, it is an excellent time to re-evaluate goals and expectations. As you know, I went from being a stay-at-home mom, volunteer, and basically the mastermind behind my house to launching two separate mompreneur driven projects. I began with taking my idea and developing the Braducts…. this led to the beginnings of Back’nGrooveMom. Both are very much in the early stages, but nonetheless, it is still great to re-evaluate at this point.
It is Monday, mid-day here on the East Coast, and I still have not updated my blog which rarely happens. I am way too scattered today. It is not as if I am having writer’s block or lacking of something to say, but rather TOO much to put into words. This is most certainly going to turn into a CRAZY WEEK, and I am sure that I have set the bar too high for myself – watch & see:
I really struggled with how to purposely represent Mother’s Day here at Back’NGrooveMom. I thought to make a video (even made a quickie that turned out terrible and ended in the virtual trash can); then, I was going to write about my mom (who we already know is awesome and truly getting her back in the groove); there was a brief moment that I considered a little post on my new reading glasses and did they make me an old mom?; next, I thought about you, all my great mom readers and how I could honor you; finally, I went to yoga to clear my head…..AND, when I left class, I learned of a terrible tragedy.
I have been wanting to write this post for sometime….it is a post that I like to think of “Half-Ass is OK.” What does that mean? “Half-Ass” is an expression that a good friend of mine who should remain nameless encourages me to subscribe to related to things that do not really matter in the whole scheme of life. Take for example, making the beds. Over the last year or so, I have been encouraging my boys to make their own beds in the morning, and then after they would leave their room….I would sneak into their room and remake the bed a little more neatly. GUILTY! Not only is this a huge waste of my time, but really “Who cares?” Certainly my boys do not care, and if you visit me – are you really going to inspect my boys’ room?
Before Oprah picked the Allure of the Seas as one of her favorites, I already booked a week onboard. Nothing against Oprah (who doesn’t love O?), but I knew the Allure was going to be fabulous. I put my deposit down when it was still just a sketch of a ship! After waiting a year to set sail, my family & I boarded the ship last week for a week of sun, fun, and of course, memories (MOM – I do not want to take one more picture).
The week went like lightning, and we are back home to grey skies and rain. I shut my window blind so I do not have to see the weather, and I am so excited to share my experience with you! The week was extra memorable for me because I officially ditched my cel phone except for my once-a-day email check. This was an awesome way to enjoy spring break with my family (a separate blog post on the ups and downs of unplugging to follow). Although, I should note that if you need to be connected on the Allure – it is no problem, mon! There is wi-fi available to purchase and cel signal (check with your carrier for rates). Enough with that….Without waiting anymore, onto our week on the Allure of the Seas.
Last week, I revealed my ups and downs of going from stay-at-home mom to woman entrepreneur. Although mostly subtle, there are definite differences in life before and after Back’NGrooveMom. One exercise that I suggest to budding mompreneurs (whether they were SAHM’s or in a different job) is to make a list of what they could and could not surrender from life as they knew it.
For me, and something I think all moms should consider, exercise is not something that I could take out of my schedule. I could give up balling socks or even cooking dinner every night (my boys LOVE Subway), but exercise was key to my overall performance and health. I know that exercise is time-consuming and hard to fit in, but check out my video on ways to make sure you fit exercise in your busy life!
Yesterday was Sunday and the weather was GORGEOUS! The whole family exercised – walked, rode bikes, and played basketball in the yard – what a difference it made (even with the dogs). By evening, all of us felt so great AND I know that we will get a fabulous night’s sleep which will lead to an extremely productive tomorrow!
Try my tips AND please leave any tips on fitting exercise in to our busy routines below … Sharing healthy mom tips is fabulous! Rachel
