As the holiday weekend approaches and signs of summer start to pop up, it is a great time to reflect on business so far for the year. At almost the half-way point through the year, it is an excellent time to re-evaluate goals and expectations. As you know, I went from being a stay-at-home mom, volunteer, and basically the mastermind behind my house to launching two separate mompreneur driven projects. I began with taking my idea and developing the Braducts…. this led to the beginnings of Back’nGrooveMom. Both are very much in the early stages, but nonetheless, it is still great to re-evaluate at this point.
What the hell is going with the Braduct, you are probably asking? I have not written about the Braduct in a long while and this has been intentional – I have been in a regrouping phase of Research and Development. Believe me, I did not want to deny any of you information or updates, I just needed time to regroup on the arduous path in front me. You all know that I am extremely impatient and, therefore, set ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS timelines for myself. After a bit of searching and examining what I was really trying to do, I am now able to proceed forward with the R&D phase.
Just to bring all of you up to speed…..last year, I had an inkling of an idea for a bra-related product. I began the VERY LONG journey of nurturing this idea from the confines of my brain to the Women of America. Along the way, my ten-year old son (who blushes endlessly when he hears the word bra) exclaimed that I was not working on a bra-related product but rather a BRADUCT. The term Braduct was born after this, and although this is not the official product name, we now affectionately refer to the item as a Braduct.
A few weeks ago I wrote about paying it forward, and I proposed that all of you should make your own pay it forward list. Well, my list keeps growing, and I keep challenging myself to think of something really creative to do with it (probably a vlog is best — which is why I more than likely keep putting it off). As the list keeps accumulating, it occurs to me that I really have not one but two pay it forward lists. A personal and professional one….yes, there is some overlap, but really there is room for two lists. While the professional pay it forward list continues to grow, today is a toast to the personal side.
In October, 2010, I basically woke up deciding to chase a dream, become a mompreneur, take a spark of an idea to market, and blog about the entire journey. This came as a BIG SHOCK to my family and friends. My family never saw me being an entrepreneur (I was a social worker turned stay-at-home-mom for 10 years) let alone many of them never heard of a blog! I am sure that my friends were equally surprised at my decision to follow an idea to market, or that I even had an idea that I wanted to bring to fruition. Needless to say, there is a group of peeps that jumped on board and amazingly supported me. That is how I came up with the idea for pay it forward part 1&1/2. This seemed logical to me since pay it forward part 2 is a list of those that have mentored and helped me, and in between the mentors and me is my first line of defense — friends and fam.
I have not recorded a Bckngruv-video in a while, so I thought that I would start this week off with one. This past week and the ones coming up, are what I call the “down and dirty” part of being a mompreneur. Nothing glamorous just a lot of meetings, research, phone calls, and general business planning. I share some of these details with you in the video, and propose an opportunity for us to share together — check it out!
editor’s note: still working out all the technical difficulties and not saying “so” every other sentence, but all in all – better than last vlog.
Every now and again, I like to write something both informative and fun for my readers! Today is one of those days….I thought in honor of Valentine’s Day, I would share a few sexy, groovy lingerie items! If you are new to Bckngruvmom, you are probably asking “why?” Well – the short and skinny is that Bckngruvmom was born out of my mompreneurial adventure playing with bras. I am developing a braduct (bra-related product) for release sometime soon. I loved at the end of 2010 when CNBC reported lingerie being one of the top items women are splurging on as we come out of recession. Woo hoo!
Sooooo, I know that many of you women will want to check this Valentine’s lingerie preview out! This week, I spent some time at Cheeks Boutique doing some investigating for you. Cheeks is a little hidden treasure located on Walnut Street in Shadyside, PA. It is a local boutique, and personally one of my favorites! Cheeks carries many unique lingerie items including bras, panties, nighties, fabulous pj’s & robes, lounge wear, sexy socks, and tights. Even my good friend from CALIFORNIA likes to check out Cheeks when she is in town!
By now you probably know that I am a big fan of StartupNation. Why? I am not being compensated by them, endorsed by them, or really connected to them in any way. So, why do I continually promote them? Simply, because it works! When an entrepreneur – either new or seasoned – turns to StartupNation for tips, the advice is there! So much information is available and you do not feel like there is a “catch.” It is a great site to look for answers and hook up with other start-up business owners. This piece is especially invaluable for mompreneurs.
Often, if a mom has either been home for a few years or is moving from the traditional workplace to being a mompreneur….capital and advice could be limited. Hiring a professional coach or advisor at that point may not be a reality, and StartupNation can help her gain knowledge and connect with others. The website provides easy access for moms (and all start-up business owners) to move forward with their dreams.
Pay it forward is a phrase that we hear quite a bit, but I take it very seriously in business AND life. I am a big believer in “treating others in a way that you want treated” because life does come full circle. I have talked about this in relationship to moms many times before. You may remember my crazy snow day vlog in which I suggest that moms offer to help one another when school cancels due to weather. In fact, recently, another friend and I set up a schedule for snow delays and helping one another with the kids. This is a result of Pay it Forward – for years, this mom and I have just stepped in and helped one another. Now, we felt dedicated to make a regular schedule!
As I prepare to launch my braduct in the coming year, I am very aware of other businesses and how they treat their customers. I am making notes of how I want to handle my business matters in a Pay it Forward manner. I do not have to explain the details of treating customers the same way you want treated – we all have had bad retail experiences.
I still continually question if we, women, can really advocate, support, and mentor one another in the workplace? That is something that I will continue to explore with my BCKNGRUV-moms as time goes on….This week, I have decided to have faith in this issue!
At the end of 2010, many of my fellow women bloggers wrote fabulous bucket lists of what they wanted to do in the upcoming year. I was not that organized at the end of the year, and I was trying to avoid writing about new years resolutions in general. I did think about 2011 in terms of what I wanted to do in abundance, but now I have my bucket list!
On the previously mentioned lists, I added what I wanted to do in the comment section on several. At the top of my wish list for 2011 was taking my mom to Vegas. With so much going on, why would this be at the top of my list? Well, you have to read my list to find out!

Have you ever been so excited that you cannot even get the words out? I am! I am not suffering from writer’s block, but rather an overflow of what wants to come out of my brain…A little crazy!! I always have A LOT to say about everything, but this time, I cannot organize the thoughts to create a blog. I considered shooting a quick video, but then decided that could become a long video of me rambling and rambling and rambling. Obviously, that would not be very EFFECTIVE. So, I am trying to organize the blog this morning, but I cannot say what time I will finish……I am “Bra-zilla” gone mad! (thanks again to a friend for yet another bra related nickname).
Time – 10:30 a.m.
I know that many of you have been waiting for the big reveal of the prototype, and I just wanted to bring you up to speed. I have had so many comments & questions: What are you doing playing with bras all the time?; Are you making a bra?; I wear a 36C; I wear an A cup; What is a “braduct?”; Can I See your prototype? So, here you go with some answers. Backngroovemom is working hard behind the scenes on lingerie-related products. At the moment, I am focusing on a bra related item. That is all I can say for now, but very soon our bra-related products will be available for test marketing! Who knows? I may call on YOU to test market.
This week also involved a quick shopping trip to Victoria’s Secret. We needed a few size B bras for “prototype playtime.” I took advantage of the moment to pick up a few items for myself. I have to put a little plug in for the new Incredible Racerback Demi Bra by V.S. I figured since I have been spending so much time in the company of bras, I would occasionally give a quick review. The Incredible Racer Back is a new style by V.S., and incredibly smooth. It is perfect for under a tight fighting shirt because it shapes smoothly without creating any lines. I have tried the Incredible Bra out, and it is now Backngroovemom- Recommended.
Which brings me back to the Backngroovemom “Braduct”…..Braduct evolved out of a conversation with my 10-year-old (JB) about my upcoming product. Yes, he did sign a non-disclosure, and we have not dared share any information with my 7-year-old (BB). If you know BB, you know that he cannot keep his lips zipped on anything. However, JB expertly identified that Backngroovemom was not creating a product, but rather a Braduct. Braduct is a very important piece of our marketing!
I have had a crazy week filled with business plan writing and office supply shopping. Woohoo! To quote Justin Timberlake, I am “Bringing Sexy Back” one office supply at a time. For me the theme of the week has been Need versus Want. When working on the sales plan for my upcoming braduct, I have been flushing out whether my product is a need or a want. Then came my trip to Office Depot to buy a file cabinet that I needed, but I also bought a fancy purple stapler and “backngroove” pink file folders (clearly a want). However, it could be argued that I needed these items. I did need folders and a stapler. Not necessarily the stylish ones that I bought, yet on the other hand, I am creating a brand. A feminine, lingerie-esque brand that possibly needed pink and purple office supplies. I know — keep telling myself that.
When examining Need versus Want in any aspect of life, business or personal, could it be that we convince ourselves that something is a need when it really is want? Can an item be both a need and a want at different times? I made a quick slide show of a major part of my life to examine this argument.
