Mompreneur Lessons From Camping – For Real!

Happy Monday, Back’nGroovers! I know you are waiting for me to write about my past weekend in a cabin.  It is the obvious…..  Well, I am going to write about it a bit except in the unexpected way.  We had a great time – our family for 2 days in a cabin at the overnight camp where my boys attend.

Mompreneurs/Dadpreneurs – pour yourself some lemonade!

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade (original quote by someone’s grandma?) ……

……An absolute favorite saying of mine.  I have always tried to apply these words to my life no matter whether it was something little or big.  When the boys were infants, and I had a LONG day that did not allow me to shower or eat a whole meal or make a phone call, I took pleasure in a hot bubble-bath after I got the boys to sleep.  When my grandmother died, I survived devastation when a few days later, I found out she would have a namesake when I discovered I was pregnant.  Today, I was really going back and forth with what I should write on the blog, AND then my day changed because my husband forgot to send my son to school with a lunch (on the last day of school).

Moms, what is your work-style? revisited

Summer is here!  I hope that you all had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend.  Our weekend flew by — between swimming, eating ice cream, a family wedding, and pool party/cookout in West Virginia, I barely had time to breathe.  It was fun while it lasted, but I woke up this morning on Tuesday with a giant sense of urgency. You see – my boys only have FIVE more days of school and that means that I have a lot to do in FIVE days!

Summer is amazing, especially if you live somewhere in the east coast.

The sun shines, the air is warm, and we do not have to BUNDLE in huge winter coats.  Summer also creates chaos because school is out and if you have school-age kids, schedules drastically change.  As moms (and dads) we scramble to figure out what out kids will do during the summer months, so we can eek out a little work.

Frazzled, Over-Committed, & Forgiveness

It is Monday, mid-day here on the East Coast, and I still have not updated my blog which rarely happens.  I am way too scattered today.  It is not as if I am having writer’s block or lacking of something to say, but rather TOO much to put into words.  This is most certainly going to turn into a CRAZY WEEK, and I am sure that I have set the bar too high for myself – watch & see:

a few weather words on wednesday

As you know – I was in Los Angeles, CA last week for Spark and Hustle.  This was the palm tree outside the hotel.

Now I am back home in Pittsburgh, PA.  This is the view from my desk yesterday.

Which one makes you want to conquer your day?

prototypes & the attack of the bra-zilla

Time – 5:00 a.m.

Have you ever been so excited that you cannot even get the words out?  I am!  I am not suffering from writer’s block, but rather an overflow of what wants to come out of my brain…A little crazy!!  I always have A LOT to say about everything, but this time, I cannot organize the thoughts to create a blog.  I considered shooting a quick video, but then decided that could become a long video of me rambling and rambling and rambling.  Obviously, that would not be very EFFECTIVE.  So, I am trying to organize the blog this morning, but I cannot say what time I will finish……I am “Bra-zilla” gone mad! (thanks again to a friend for yet another bra related nickname).

Time – 10:30 a.m.

I know that many of you have been waiting for the big reveal of the prototype, and I just wanted to bring you up to speed.  I have had so many comments & questions: What are you doing playing with bras all the time?;  Are you making a bra?; I wear a 36C; I wear an A cup; What is a “braduct?”; Can I See your prototype?  So, here you go with some answers.  Backngroovemom is working hard behind the scenes on lingerie-related products. At the moment, I am focusing on a bra related item.  That is all I can say for now, but very soon our bra-related products will be available for test marketing!  Who knows?  I may call on YOU to test market.

This week also involved a quick shopping trip to Victoria’s Secret.  We needed a few size B bras for “prototype playtime.”  I took advantage of the moment to pick up a few items for myself.  I have to put a little plug in for the new Incredible Racerback Demi Bra by V.S.  I figured since I have been spending so much time in the company of bras, I would occasionally give a quick review.  The Incredible Racer Back is a new style by V.S., and incredibly smooth.  It is perfect for under a tight fighting shirt because it shapes smoothly without creating any lines. I have tried the Incredible Bra out, and it is now Backngroovemom- Recommended.

Which brings me back to the Backngroovemom “Braduct”…..Braduct evolved out of a conversation with my 10-year-old (JB) about my upcoming product.  Yes, he did sign a non-disclosure, and we have not dared share any information with my 7-year-old (BB).  If you know BB, you know that he cannot keep his lips zipped on anything.  However, JB expertly identified that Backngroovemom was not creating a product, but rather a Braduct.  Braduct is a very important piece of our marketing!

career transitions and “out-of-groove dad”

When I started writing the Backngroovemom Blog, I was not sure what direction it would take (I know – red flag).  Now that the future of Backngroovemom is becoming clearer (very exciting details at a further date), the one point that remains clear to me is Backngroovemom is/was not a place for hubby obsessing.  By hubby obsessing, I mean gushy, mushy, cutesy anecdotes about the hubs AND no hubby bashing.  I have never been one for anything cutesy and this was a blog about mommies getting their groove back, therefore hubby bashing just seemed counterproductive.

All this being said, I could not help but to wonder this weekend “Does Backngroovemom equal Out-of-Groove-Dad”?  I decided to spend some time thinking about this question and blogging my thoughts.  For the small group of you who know my hubby, you know that he does his absolute best to stay out of social media…..could be interesting!  When googling out-of-groove, I did not know whether I would find my husband’s picture (turns out that I did NOT), but I did come across this funny video of the Penguins of Madagascar being “out of groove”.   Watch this – I will explain later…..

snow days part 2, getting groove back, & girls night out

After a week that included one snow day, one 2 hour weather-related delay, my crazy attempt at a vlog, a mostly non productive Friday, and yes – no school this coming Monday…I felt the need to address the snow day discussion again.  I will not spend a lot more time on it — just a few more thoughts.  By the way, Backngroove Readers — did you ever notice that my background pic is the ocean? Guess what? I do not like snow!  I know crazy…I should move, but my mom would miss me too much (and that is a blog for a whole different day).  My groove was totally off track this week.

First of all, I am not the first to say this, but what is with the snow delay?  We did not have snow delays growing up (I know – my grandmother used to walk miles to school), but honestly the delays are ridiculous.  Not ridiculous because the school wants children to safely travel to and from school, BUT ridiculous because why is it not a priority for cities, townships, communities to make certain that roads are clear so buses and cars can take kids to school on time.  As far as the cold weather goes — I cannot even go there because in reality how much does it warm up between 7 & 9 a.m.? Not much.

vampires, werewolves, turkeys, and a little stress relief

This may be Too Much Information for you, but two Thanksgivings ago…I stayed in pj’s for several days unable to put down the Twilight Saga. Although I am an avid reader (my nightstand looks like an avalanche), I had never picked up a science fiction book in my life. My friend, Tori, was reading the Twilight books and would not stop talking about them, so I had to see what all the hype was about…….24 sleepless hours later, I had finished book 1 – Twilight. For the next week, I completely neglected my family and friends because I was infatuated with the vegetarian bloodsuckers. No one could understand the fascination except for those that had experienced it first hand.

I am sure sometime in the last 2 years, you have heard the phrase “Twi-moms”? Why does this phenomenon happen? Well – This thought is not original to me, but moms become hooked on Twilight because it places them back in a carefree time. Forks, Washington is a setting where endless love & passion exists. Whether you cheer for Team Edward or Team Jacob, Twilight transports moms to a different time in their lives. A place where work/life balance does not exist; there are no sick/snow days, budget problems, or bad hair days. This is not to say that we moms (at home and career) do not have a lot of satisfaction from our current lives…it is just fun sometimes to escape!

Stephenie Meyer is to be admired. She had a dream, and she made it happen. For those of you who do not know, Stephenie Meyer (mother of 3) woke up from a dream about vampires and created the Twilight Saga. She wrote at odd hours around her family life, faced a number of rejections from publishers, and had her fifth manuscript leaked on the Internet. All that being said, she achieved a dream while having a family. She is career mom that can really be looked at as a role model.

As Thanksgiving, 2010 approaches…. We all need to be thankful for our families, our health, and the wonderful life experiences that we have. As moms, occasionally, we have to escape and rejuvenate ourselves. A little respite for the brain goes a long way especially as holiday season and WINTER BREAK looms ahead. Moms – make time for you this time of year…whether it is getting lost in a book, curling up with a holiday movie, or just taking a nap.

hurricane, tornado, or microburst – what is your style?

I started writing this last Friday 10/22/1010

When I first met my husband, he called me “the hurricane” because I moved at such high intensity.  This week, I attacked my new project and my family life at hurricane speed. I was fairly productive, but realized that next week – I have to start making lists.  Why?  Because when you are no longer a single gal, but rather a couple or family member, you have to prioritize.  You cannot wait until 9 p.m. to order dinner, you have to remember to pick your kids up from school, and you need to check on your aging parents or in-laws. Next week, the goal is to learn how to work in “microbursts.” I would describe “microbursts” as being short intervals of work that are highly productive (with Starbucks coffee breaks in between).
