Women Entrepreneurs – be honest and open!

A few months ago, I connected with a fun and exciting female inventor through my blog.  We have been working together a bit….bouncing ideas off one another and giving feedback.  This entrepreneur, Becky Lucid, has also been an amazing supporter of the blog, so I asked her to write-up some thoughts for a post.  When I received Becky’s entry, I was extremely flattered and a little embarrassed to run it (it was about ME), but I decided to share it with you.  Not as a big tribute to me, but rather as a spotlight on the difference one woman can make on another with just an open-mind and a helping hand.  I am so thankful for the collaboration that Becky and I share, and while she is not a “mom” in the traditional sense, she is a “daughter” with “mom” responsibilties….read on and you will see:

Imagination, Good Enough, & a little more….

The week began with a bang for this Back’NGrooveMom!  The whirlwind started early Monday Morning when I attended a breakfast and kickoff event for imagine! career week.  It was thrilling to be invited.  Why was this so exciting?  The Keynote speaker was our Governor, The Honorable Tom Corbett, AND the opening and closing remarks were being given by a close friend, fabulous gal, mom, and mentor – Stefani Pashman.  Stefani is the CEO of Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board, A MOM, and an advocate for women everywhere.

The overall purpose of imagine! career week is to “Explore the many Career Paths in the Pittsburgh Region,” and the week is full of workshops and information sessions on those career paths.  Many of the sessions focus on our youth.  The event, organized and arranged for by Stefani and her staff, has made youth a priority! Governor Corbett picked up on this topic in his address, and spoke on the importance of exposing young people to opportunities.

Outstanding Woman Entrepreneur & Fabulous Read

Did you ever meet someone and just know that meeting them was a life-changing event?  A few months ago, I met Vivian Tenorio at Spark & Hustle.  Upon meeting Vivian, I knew that my life was enhanced in a new way.  Why?  Determined and bright, Vivian is a breath of fresh air from the norm, and a woman I am happy to consider a role model.  Vivian has set a new standard for being a woman entrepreneur/mompreneur, developing a delicious product, AND placing that product on shelves.  Vivian is approachable, real, and compassionate towards budding mompreneurs; truly someone to be admired.

Vivian recently published a book, From Pink Slip to Product Launch in a Weak Economy.  Vivian’s story of determination and success as a woman entrepreneur is a must read for any woman with dreams of starting a business of her own.  The book is an amazingly quick read that immediately grabs your attention.  Vivian’s story is riveting from the beginning to where she is now, which is by no means the end.  Vivian is going to go much further than she already has travelled.

a few little gems to keep you & me sparkling

It has been a roller coaster of a winter that began with my mom having major back surgery and ended with my father-in-law passing.  I do not want to make this post all about the ups and downs of my life over the last few months, but rather about where my life will take me now.  Beyond still supporting my mom, being there for my kids, and lending a shoulder for my mother-in-law to cry on…..I also really need to get my ass in gear with my mompreneur travels.  Throughout the winter, I felt proud that I was still continuing to check items off my to-do list while dealing with the swell of personal crises surrounding me.  Now that spring has sprung (I think – it is snowing a bit today), I am ready to forge ahead with a new attitude.  Just like the sun will be shining daily (maybe), I plan to sparkle again in my pursuits.

what mompreneurs can learn from a few teenagers?

On most days I am a mompreneur until 4 p.m., and then I am a basketball mom until bedtime when I become a mompreneur again.  Sort of like Cinderella changes at midnight, I turn into a basketball mom as soon as my boys finish school.  I do not want to change this – I love hanging at the gym, watching the boys practice, and I even love that I do nothing else than watch basketball on the weekends – usually 6 games/weekend.  These are memories and time with my boys that will be with me long after I am no longer needed in the role of basketball mom.

The other night, we were at a championship game (which is funny – an 11 & 12-year-old championship game, but very serious).  My son’s team started the game off faced with a big challenge.  What was the challenge? Their team only had a total of 6 players with one on crutches with a broken foot, and then a 2nd player showed up on crutches to the game.  Now, they were down to 4 active players.  The refs made the decision for the two teams to play 4 on 4 (whew).  With two of the team’s strongest rebounders on the bench, the team still managed to gain a little lead and stay there the whole game.  With a few minutes left, a player on my son’s team fouled out AND now they had to play 3 on 4 with a narrow lead.  The exciting news is that my son’s team WON even under crazy reconfiguring and challenges.

What is the overall point of this story?  While my son and his teammates are all good little players, the two teenager coaches really led the team to their victory. Over a celebratory ice cream, my son recounted to me all the little details that his coaches filtered to the team.  The coaches had a game plan mapped out as to how they were going to face the challenges.  Again, what is the point?  The point is that being a mompreneur has many similarities to this situation of these teenage coaches and their dwindling team of active players and very narrow lead.

who is your inspiration? I will share mine with you –

Last week, I received an email AND a phone message from two local moms that they were loving the blog.  Awwww….they made me feel so awesome.  What I could not believe was that the email stated that I was an inspiration.  Me – an inspiration – no way!  I could have floated to pick the boys up at school that day; I was on Cloud 9.

I started to think a lot about inspiration after this…..and, who inspires me.  Turns out, I have a pretty lengthy list of celebrity and personal inspiration, so I decided to share just a few with you.

No surprise that my celebrity inspiration list begins with Mark Zuckerberg (I love facebook).  Zuckerberg changed and continues to change the way we live, communicate, and interact while creating his social platform (he left Harvard without graduating to pursue his dreams)!  I find it amazing when someone has such open-ended passion and vision.  Zuckerberg is the type of inspiration that my boys’ generation and ones thereafter will continue to channel.
